August 8, 2010 - At the Democratic forum at the Casey Community Center Becky once again said
she supports the Science City because we need jobs but didn't give any indication that she has a
plan to attract businesses to the county. She has not indicated that the obvious problems with
the master plan or the opposition from the residents is of any concern to her.
July 12, 2010 - At the Germantown Chamber of Commerce candidate forum, Becky Wagner spoke
emphatically that we've got to talk creatively about setting up public/private partnerships to build
the Corridor Cities Transitway (CCT) so we can "get that Science City built"!
Obviously Ms. Wagner has bought the developer's marketing rhetoric and is either unclear on
the concept or has not done her homework. The Gaithersburg West Master Plan (aka the Great
Seneca Science Corridor Master Plan) proposes 17.5 million square feet of commercial space and
5,700 housing units. Only 40% of the commercial space is required to be science-related so 60%
of the space can be generic commercial office space. The biotech industry is not a "build it and
they will come" type of industry.
Councilmember Marc Elrich, who has done his homework, remarked that there is already, at
present, 33 million square feet of approved commercial space that has not been built and 17
million square feet of vacant commercial space in the county...enough for 165,000 jobs! So,
approving more commercial space will not necessarily accomplish anything.
December 15, 2009 - Becky Wagner is well spoken but she is very tight with the developer
community. Maryland Politics Watch Blog
